Can you put oven grates in the dishwasher?
Yes, your oven grates are completely dishwasher safe. Recently, the new machines contain a wider
space to fit your grates as they are large. There is no harm in running a cycle to clean your oven grates. Although, don’t set your expectations high!
Greasy grimes and sticky scales on your grates are very stubborn, they will not vanish just by washing them in the dishwasher.
Strong hands are needed to remove strong scales. You must be wondering that dishwashers can do a pretty good job removing grease, I thought so too! Until I found out that the grimes are baked on the grates which makes it look almost impossible to clean.
A dishwasher will only make the baked grease soft enough for us to clean later by hand easily. But have you thought about how can you fit your oven grates in a dishwasher?
How to fit oven grates in the dishwasher?
Oven grates can be tricky to fit into a dishwasher due to their size. Usually, most dishwashers are 24 by 24 inches and oven grates are 16 to 17 inches deep, which means they can fit in a regular dishwasher, though you may need to slightly tilt them.
You must be aware of the spray arm function in a dishwasher, if so, then it is vital to know that there should be no blockage or else the dishwasher may not function.
The water may not regulate properly causing an error in the machine. After running a cycle with your grates, the grimes have possibly been softened by now. Are you wondering what effective ways can you use to clean your oven grates?
What are the best ways to clean your oven grates?
Continuous scrubbing and washing can be very hectic and energy-consuming. Well, I have got some amazing hacks to share that will make your oven grates look good as new.
- METHOD 1: baking soda & vinegar
This method has been used for ages. A mixture of vinegar and baking soda works like magic! All you have to do is set your oven grates in a bathtub or lay them flat in your washing area. Once they’re set, add a few pinches of baking soda over the grates and then spray vinegar over them.
You may observe some fizzing reaction, no need to worry, the baking soda acts as a cleanser and reacts with vinegar. If you have placed your grates in a bathtub then run some hot water over them, but if you have laid them down flat in an empty area then take a cloth, dip it in hot water and gently squeeze it over the grates.
Leave the grates overnight so that once the grease and grimes have softened you can easily scrub them off with a sponge or an old toothbrush. In the end, rinse them clean and dry them in the open air before placing them back in your oven.
- METHOD 2: ammonia trash bags
This method is the far most dangerous, yet most effective. To process this way, you need a big trash bag, a bin and ammonia. This should be carried out in an empty area, preferably outside your house where a water hose is simply approachable.
Start by putting your oven grates in the large trash bag, add half a cup of ammonia, tightly tie the bag and put it in the bin. Let it sit overnight.
Warning: seal the bag tightly if you do not want ammonia leaching out. It can be harmful. Do not let ammonia fumes circulate in your house.
Cautions: Wear a mask while doing this method to avoid inhaling fumes. The next day you may carefully take the oven grates out and wash them down with a water hose. There will be no scrubbing needed as your ammonia has disappeared from all the sticky and baked-on grease.
METHOD 3: Dish-washing liquid.
This last method works on slightly weak grimes. You need your bathtub to carry out this process, lay them in a bathtub half-filled with warm water, add a whole cup of dish soap and let it overnight. The next day you may use a towel to remove those grease layers and rinse them off with cold water.
These methods are well tested and I have personally tried all of them. For further questions, you may comment down in the comment box or inbox us!
